There are two major players in the beer market: Unicer - Bebidas de Portugal, S.A., who make Superbock, and Sociedade Central de Cervejas, S.A. producers of Sargres. Between them, these two breweries control more than 90% of the Portuguese beer market. Privatisation in the 1990s has seen the emergence of new brewers and a more diverse range of styles. The Superbock brand was born in 1927 and has beaten its rival Sagres to become Portugal's best-selling beer. Portugal is probably better known for its excellent wines however beer has been brewed in Portugal since ancient times. It was the Romans who introduced beer to Portugal. Their term for brewing "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" is where the word "Cerveja" is derived from. Today Portugal is Europe's 7th largest beer exporter. To upgrade its game in the global arena, Unicer decided to change its name to Super Bock Group.
