The building's modernist design dreamed up by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas to some is considered to be out of place amongst Porto's more traditional architecture and has been likened to a landed meteorite. Yet since its completion in 2005, it has become something of a cultural icon in Porto despite missing its completion deadline to celebrate Porto being the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2001. The gleaming white irregular-shaped building stands an impressive twelve storeys tall thus dominating the skyline in the area. The two auditoriums inside have a capacity for 1538 people and now plays host to some of Portugal's most important music events, covering just about every genre you can imagine. The restaurant located on the top floor delights diners with breathtaking views over the Praca Mouzinho de Albuquerque, with the Rotunda da Boavista and over the Porto skyline beyond. The restaurant closes at 23h00 on weekdays and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
