Firefighters in Portugal are held in high esteem, for risking their lives battling the numerous wildfires blighting the Portuguese landscapes and endangering lives each summer season. This unique museum pays homage to their dedication and bravery.
The museum is located close the the river Leça in Matosinhos, North of Porto, within a large building belonging to the Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira Humanitarian Association (Associação Humanitária de Matosinhos e Leça da Palmeira). Created in 1943 the museum has been in its current spot since 1973. The collection consists of more than 800 exhibits; including fire-fighting gear, sea rescue equipment and awards of the Sociedade Humanitária. Worth noting are the horse-drawn engines dating back to the 19th century, motor pumps, extinguishers, rockets and much more. Sea rescue is also a special concern of the museum and a macabre collection of ship wreckage can also be seen here.
