There are two major players in the beer market: Unicer - Bebidas de Portugal, S.A. who make Superbock, and Sociedade Central de Cervejas, S.A. who are responsible for Sargres. Between them, these two breweries control more than 90% of the Portuguese beer market. Privatisation in the 1990s has seen the emergence of new brewers and a more diverse range of styles. The Superbock brand was established in 1927 and has beaten its rival Sagres to become Portugal's best selling beer both nationally and internationally. Portugal is probably better known for its excellent wines however beer has been brewed in Portugal since ancient times and is Europe's 7th largest beer exporter. It was in fact the Romans who introduced beer to Portugal. Their term for brewing "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" is where the word "Cerveja" is derived from. To upgrade its game in the global arena, Unicer decided to change its name to Super Bock Group.
This circuit tour, placed inside Super Bock Group's very own production centre, offers visitors an immersive experience into the world of beer. You will learn about beer production processes, starting with the raw materials, which are slowly transformed into the wort that will be fermented and ending in the filling line where the sound of thousands of tinkling bottles can be heard. You will also learn about the History of Super Bock, one of the most recognised national brands. In the final part of the tour, your senses will be enticed with the tasting of two beer styles with a delicious food pairing.
Highlights of the tour include the emblematic Copper Room, which was the first brewing room of this production centre and contains the original iconic copper kettles. In addition to the main factory, the tour also includes the small brewery where special Super Bock Selecção 1927 artisan beers are crafted. The tour ends in the lounge where you can enjoy two special beers with food pairing. Each tour has an approximate duration of two hours, with a maximum of 50 people per tour. It is necessary to make a reservation, indicating the day, schedule, and number of people attending the tour.
