The museum has been located close the the river Leça in Matosinhos, North of Porto, within large room belonging to the Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira Humanitarian Association (Associação Humanitária de Matosinhos e Leça da Palmeira). Created in 1943 and installed in the current building in 1973. The collection consists of more than 800 exhibits; including fire-fighting equipment, sea rescue equipment and awards of the Sociedade Humanitária. Old engines on display here date as far back as the 19th century of animal and human traction, motor pumps, extinguishers, rockets and much more. Sea rescue is also a special concern of the museum and a macabre collection of ship wreckage can also be seen here.
